Make a difference...Be the difference...One life at a time!!!
|
| As you guys can clearly see, our website has undergone some
major changes. So in the spirt of these changes, Mentor DeKalb has
also undergone some changes.
We wanted to make it easier for people in our communities to get
involved in Mentor DeKalb. So we have done some changes in our mandatory
amount of time spent with each child. We know that not everyone
has an entire hour every week to turn loose from your job and go
to the schools. So our three new plans make is somewhat easier.
Here are our new plans.
- Book Buddy -- Grades K-3 -- 30 minutes per
month. This type of involvement is set up for people that have
a minimum amount of time but really do want to get involved. You
get to go to the schools and read a book with a child. You can
read to them, they can read to you, or you can take turns reading
to each other. 30 mins can make a big difference in a child that
just needs a little extra attention or maybe a little more help
with their reading.
- Peer Pals -- Grade 4-5 -- 30 minutes twice
a month. This is designed for people who have a little more time
to spend but still can't commit to a full hour each week. Your
matched up with a child with similar interests and just go hang
out with them for 30 mins two times a month. You can read with
them, draw, play games, or just show up and eat lunch with them.
What ever activity the child wants to doyou can do with them.
- Middle Ground -- Grade 6-8 -- One hour per
week, must have 3 hours total per month. This is closest to our
old Mentoring. The Mentor goes to the school they choose, and
simply spend an hour a week with their mentee. Just like Peer
Pals, just a little older student, and a little more time. This
does require a person who has more free time.
Mentors may choose from these three levels according to age group
and time frames. The time established for mentors to spend at each
school is a minimum. Mentors may spend more time than allotted above
as long as it is approved by the teacher and the school contact
person.
